The story
Original from Los Angeles. I grew up watching old westerns with my dad and fell in love with the western culture. I found myself the older I got venturing out to the deserts of California to all the old ghost towns and old mining claims.
Fast forward and I ended up moving to Reno NV. There I started going to the Reno rodeo.Thats where I started seeing more western and southwest styles and wanted to be part of that even more. While in Reno I met my wife and together we both started going on adventures to the crystal mines up in "dog valley". We'd go up there it seemed weekly collecting crystals.
Fast forward again we moved to Elign OR. There I started getting into leather work making seaths for knives. I had a passion now and it was stamping and tooling. I always stuck with that western and vintage style. Looking at old magazines from the 50-70s for inspiration. While in Oregon we had 2 kids. The wife and I talked about moving to a warmer state. We looked at Texas and New Mexico we both wanted that Southwest feeling. Then we found Arizona.
After awhile we pinned down a city Prescott. A perfect mixture of all 4 seasons and just that great hometown feeling to raise our family. My wife got into silversmithing making a really successful name for herself. She got so busy that one day she said " You need to quit your job and come work for me". My old work chair never spun so fast.
I started with string Navajo Pearls and loved it. I always remember my mom having this massive beaded necklace. I asked her to send me a picture and really started looking at it and thinking " I could definitely make something like that" .......well when you make beads no one ever tells you the amount of effort and time that goes into them and started realizing quickly why there isn't to many beadsmiths around.
I went to Yavapai college for silversmithing and was really fortunate that my teacher knew and really liked making beads. He showed me a lot of great tricks and stamping techniques. I was hooked. I made several beads.....some that will never see the light of day ever. But after quite a few batches I nailed it down.
I decided that this was something I want to do and I wanted to do this for a living. I did hours and hours of research on beads, southwest beads, dessert pearl, and Navajo Perals and wanted to set myself apart. So I put in a trademark for the name Arizona Pearl™. Something that I could call my own and make beautiful pieces of jewelry with.
And that forks is how it started but not yet the end of the tale of how we got our start in the fantastic world of southwest jewelry.
